Who Is Oeuf?

Oeuf, is a New York-based design company founded in 2002 by French/American couple, Sophie Demenge and Michael Ryan. Known for our modern take on nursery furniture, we have been a pioneer of fair trade and eco friendly products long before it was fashionable to do so.

From our furniture line produced in Europe to our clothing and decor produced by a group of women knitters in Bolivia and Peru, we’ve made it our mission to ensure environmentally sound products starting with the choice of materials to the manufacturing processes to the selection of recycled packaging.

How do you pronounce “Oeuf”?

Oeuf (pronounced UH-F), is also the french word for egg!

Oeuf, be good.

When we were kids, whenever our parents dropped us off somewhere like school, our grandparents’ house for the weekend or even summer camp, they always gave us a hug and a kiss and told us to “be good” as they waved goodbye.

As kids, we’re very literal and knew this meant…don’t cut your sister’s hair; don’t glue yourself to the wall; don’t go running off into the woods with nothing but your underwear and a toothbrush. At the time, it was mostly about good behavior.

Now as parents, we realize there is a whole other level of meaning when we kiss them goodbye and tell them to be good. We know we’re really telling them to be good people. Do the right thing, make us proud, be the kind of people we hope to be. At Oeuf, we have the chance to elevate this notion once again and be a good company. When we say Be Good, we mean:

Be good designers.
Simple, clean, intuitive products that are easy and safe to use; made with quality craftsmanship that will last from generation to generation; designed with a European sensibility that is fun and stylish, reflecting the needs and lifestyle of today’s modern families.

Be good people.
Respect the people who work with us and treat them fairly whether employees, artisans, retailers, or consumers. Provide a safe and supportive working environment that allows working families to live and thrive in the United States, Europe and abroad. Honor cultural traditions, diversity and local values. Pay people living wages that enable them to live healthy, fulfilling lives and send their own children to school.

Be good to the planet.
Use natural, renewable, recyclable materials that emphasize conservation and lead to environmentally sound products. Employ eco-conscious manufacturing processes that promote low emissions and sustainability.

Be Good is not just something we say-- its something we mean. As parents, we want our children to inherit a world that is better than we found it. As Oeuf, we have the ability to make that happen.

Oeuf is proud to offer an extensive selection of GREENGUARD Gold certified furniture. The GREENGUARD Gold mark certifies that our furniture has been independently tested and verified to meet rigorous standards for chemical emissions and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde and phthalates. As families have grown increasingly concerned about potential health hazards and environmental concerns related to chemical emissions, Oeuf maintains the commitment we have always had to be at the highest level of safety and quality. GREENGUARD Gold gives you the assurance of our commitment.

GREENGUARD Gold offers the some of the world's most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds into indoor air, and considers additional safety factors to account for sensitive individuals (such as children and the elderly). It is referenced by both The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Building Rating System. It means that our products have been tested for over 10,000 chemicals and more than 360 VOCs. VOC emissions from building materials and furnishings can be a major source of indoor air pollution, and may contribute to health problems in children such as asthma and allergies. GREENGUARD Certification has been widely adopted as a trusted standard for low-emitting products.

Simply put, GREENGUARD Gold is another way that Oeuf commits to providing products that are healthier for families, and better for the environment. From bassinets, to cribs, to beds and dressers, we will always ensure that our products support the health of your children.

Who makes the Alpaca knits?

Our knits are made by a cooperative of women in Bolivia. The knitters who make these pieces work in self-managed groups, making decisions as a democracy.  Their partnership with Oeuf has made a significant impact on their lives.  When you buy these knits, you help transform the lives of women and children in Bolivia.

Do I have to anchor my Dresser and Shelf Unit to the wall?

Yes!! It is very important that you anchor Dressers and Mini Libraries to the wall as recommended by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. In fact, this shoud be done with all furniture and TV's.  (If you have a Classic Hutch, which has been discontinued, it should also be anchored to the wall.)

Not all of our pieces use wood glue; however, when we do use glue it is non-toxic and water-based (think Elmer’s).  In the process of producing plywood and MDF, only certified CARB 2 adhesives are used.

What are the VOC emission levels in your furniture?

Recent attention has focused on the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted into the air in our homes. Typically, the VOC of most concern is formaldehyde. Our products meet the toughest European (E1) and Californian emissions standards (CARB 1 and 2) for formaldehyde emissions. The CARB 2 standards were be adopted federally in 2013.  We have always met the CARB 1 standard before it even existed and have been using materials that meet the CARB 2 standard since 2011.

Is there formaldehyde in your wood?

All solid wood contains a small amounts of formaldehyde.  Even the breathe we exhale contains formaldehyde.  Nevertheless, we are comitted to minimizing it as much as possible.

What finishes are available?

We offer natural birch, walnut stain, and white finishes.

What kind of stains and paints do you use?

The finishes we use on our furniture are free of VOC health hazards, non-toxic and water-based. We meet all European, US, Canadian and Australian standards for safety and emissions, and our finishes are also approved in Europe for use on children’s toys.

Will the colors from one collection match the colors from another collection?

All of the finishes match between collections. For example, a white Classic Dresser will match a white Sparrow Crib. Please note, though, that since the birch and walnut finishes show the natural grain of the wood, there may be uneveness in the color, and the finishes may not be identical from piece to piece.
